Slashdot Your Rights Online Story | Assange Rape Case Reopened: “wikileakileaks.org has been launched by the chief editor of Gawker to give Wikileaks a taste of its own medicine. You can find links to details on the molestation charges there”

I wonder if gizmodo will start offering money for Julian Assange’s “lost” gadgets.

Gawker Media should have “Gawker, pushing the limits of the word journalism and the words of the penal code” as a company slogan.

Video: Flash on Android Is Shockingly Bad

Posted: September 1st, 2010

Video: Flash on Android Is Shockingly Bad:

Lol this is sooooo much like the experience my friends got when they tried to show me flash on their devices – some even tried over 3G and there’s the fact that 80% of all interesting non-adult flash content (TV shows & Movies) is blocked outside of the US. But no matter. It was a painful lesson in patience since I had to stand there and wait and wait and wait… for nothing. Or for some really choppy video.

Yeah I do have a Nexus One but considering I rarely access flash content on my PC outside of Youtube except for some random videos like this one, I really haven’t tried it on my phone. It’s not a judgement on the quality of the experience, it’s just that I haven’t yet had the necessity though I expect it to be a frustrating experience, even if it happens next year. It won’t get any better imo.

It looks like with the rollout of Flash on Android devices, the cries for flash on the iPhone/iPad suddenly died. I really wonder how people expected flash to work properly on a phone when it has trouble working on a netbook….

AMOLEDs

Daring Fireball Linked List: Laptop Mag Runs Android Battery Test: “So, AMOLED: colors look weird, you can’t see them in sunlight, the components are in short supply, and battery life is worse. “

Sums up my experience and what I’ve been saying to people about AMOLEDs pretty nicely (except for the short supply which is irrelevant).

H264 free as in beer for internet video

MPEG LA’s AVC License Will Not Charge Royalties for Internet Video That Is Free to End Users Through Life of License | Business Wire: “MPEG LA announced today that its AVC Patent Portfolio License will continue not to charge royalties for Internet Video that is free to end users (known as ‘Internet Broadcast AVC Video’) during the entire life of this License. MPEG LA previously announced it would not charge royalties for such video through December 31, 2015

(…)

MPEG LA’s AVC Patent Portfolio License provides access to essential patent rights for the AVC/H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) digital video coding standard. In addition to Internet Broadcast AVC Video, MPEG LA’s AVC Patent Portfolio License provides coverage for devices that decode and encode AVC video, AVC video sold to end users for a fee on a title or subscription basis and free television video services. AVC video is used in set-top boxes, media player and other personal computer software, mobile devices including telephones and mobile television receivers, Blu-ray Disc™ players and recorders, Blu-ray video optical discs, game machines, personal media player devices and still and video cameras. “

Guess they felt the WebM heat. While I guess this means H264 will become the de-facto standard, I’d rather see everyone switch to WebM.

Sounds like Sunday

Hey, Digg — This 17-Year-Old Knows What You Are Thinking: “his algorithm — which he’s been working on in his spare time for the past several months — has so far proven to be 63-percent accurate when it comes to predicting what will make the Digg front page.”

(Via Slashdot)

Ahh Sunday, that day of the week when news outlets bring out whatever crap didn’t make the cut during the week in order not to work. Umm wait… it’s not Sunday yet!

63% accuracy…? 50% is a coin toss. 63% is news-worthy? Stuff like this is forcing me to consider removing Slashdot from my feeds.

WP Super Cache Problem

Posted: August 26th, 2010

I toyed with the WP Super Cache plugin, just for kicks. sometime after, my blog (the page that lists blog posts and the RSS feed apparently) stopped updating without me noticing. Blargh. I’ve disabled it since I don’t really need it and was just playing.

  • This project, ioquake3 (or ioq3 for short,) aims to build upon id Software's Quake 3 source code release. The source code was released on August 20, 2005 under the GPLv2. Since then, we have been cleaning up, fixing bugs, and adding features.

Our permanent goal is to create the open source Quake 3 distribution upon which people base their games and projects. We also seek to have the perfect version of the engine for playing Quake 3: Arena, Team Arena, and all popular mods. This distribution of the engine has been ported to many new platforms and has had a slew of new features added, along with massive bug extermination. While we don't have PunkBuster (and never will), we do havemore security for servers and clients from various bugfixes which aren't in id's client.

  • Quake 3 for Android
  • So the idea here is:

    See cool stuff.
    Learn how it's done.
Use it in your own work.

The HTML5 Studio has nine demos that show off some fanciful sides of HTML5, CSS3 and friends.

The dirty little secret about Google Android

The dirty little secret about Google Android | Tech Sanity Check | TechRepublic.com: “But, the consequence of not putting any walls around your product is that both the good guys and the bad guys can do anything they want with it. And for Android, that means that it’s being manipulated, modified, and maimed by companies that care more about preserving their old business models than empowering people with the next great wave of computing devices.”

After more than two years in iterative development, you get the best of the best practices baked in: cross-browser normalization, performance optimizations, even optional features like cross-domain ajax and flash. A starter apache .htaccess config file hooks you the eff up with caching rules and preps your site to serve HTML5 video, use @font-face, and get your gzip zipple on.
